In 1987 British Rail embarked on an ambitious journey to rebrand its flagship InterCity sector and its services. The project was awarded to Newell and Sorrell Design Limited. In August 1988, less than a year after its official launch, InterCity issued a plush black leather Design Guide in A5 4-ring binder format, containing basic elements and several areas of application across the business. The Design Guide was reissued in March 1991 with many pages, including the dividers, superseded with updated versions. Further InterCity brand specifics were also published in the form of Information Sheets.
